Most mid-range Android below 2022Physical SIM only — use *#06# to check
💡 Quick check for any Android: Open the phone dialler and type *#06#. If an EID number appears in the list of identifiers, your device has an eSIM chip. If only an IMEI appears, it is physical SIM only.

🔒 Carrier locks — the hidden blocker

Having eSIM hardware is not enough on its own. If your phone is carrier-locked, it will refuse to install eSIM profiles from any other provider — including travel eSIMs. This is separate from whether the hardware physically supports eSIM.

⚠️ Check before you travel: Contact your home carrier or visit their website to check if your device is unlocked. Most carriers unlock devices automatically after 12–24 months on contract, or on request if fully paid off.
iPhones bought after 2022 in most markets: Apple now sells unlocked iPhones by default in most countries. If you bought your iPhone directly from Apple rather than a carrier, it is almost certainly unlocked.
🔓 How to unlock: Call your carrier's customer service and request an unlock. In the UK, US and EU, carriers are legally required to unlock devices once the contract is completed. Allow 24–72 hours for the unlock to process.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know if my phone supports eSIM?+
The fastest way is to dial *#06# on any phone. If an EID number appears alongside your IMEI, your device has an eSIM chip. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and look for EID. On Android, Settings > About Phone > Status Information > EID.
Can I use eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?+
Yes, on most modern phones. This is called Dual SIM — you keep your home number on the physical SIM for calls and texts, while the travel eSIM handles local data. iPhone 13 and later, Samsung S20+, Google Pixel 6+, and most recent flagships support this.
My phone has eSIM hardware but the option is greyed out — why?+
This usually means your phone is carrier-locked, or your carrier has disabled eSIM functionality on your specific model. Contact your carrier to request an unlock, or check if a software update resolves the issue.
Does my iPhone purchased in China support eSIM?+
No. iPhone models sold in mainland China (model numbers ending in CH) do not support eSIM due to Chinese regulatory requirements. iPhones purchased in Hong Kong, Taiwan, or any other market do support eSIM normally.
How many eSIM profiles can my phone store?+
Most devices can store multiple eSIM profiles (typically 5–20) but can only have 1–2 active at once. iPhone 13+ can have multiple profiles but only one active alongside a physical SIM. This means you can store profiles for different countries and switch between them without re-scanning QR codes.
