📡 Which carriers support eSIM in Japan?
Japan has three major national carriers — NTT Docomo, SoftBank, and au by KDDI — all of which fully support eSIM. A fourth carrier, Rakuten Mobile, also supports eSIM with competitive pricing, though its coverage outside major metropolitan areas is noticeably thinner than the big three.
For tourists, Docomo and SoftBank have the strongest nationwide reach. Docomo in particular is the most widely deployed network in rural Japan and on the Shinkansen bullet train network, including inside the longer mountain tunnels.
| Carrier | eSIM Support | 5G | Rural Reach | Best For |
| NTT Docomo | ✓ Full | ✓ | Excellent | All-round, rural |
| SoftBank | ✓ Full | ✓ | Very good | Cities, tourists |
| au by KDDI | ✓ Full | ✓ | Excellent | Rural, Band 18/26 |
| Rakuten Mobile | ✓ Full | Limited | Thin | Budget, Tokyo only |
✈️ Activating your eSIM for Japan
Japan's biggest advantage is that you can purchase and activate your eSIM before you board your flight. Buy a plan from Airalo, Nomad or Holafly, receive a QR code by email, scan it in Settings, and set it to activate automatically when you land. You'll have full connectivity before your bag arrives at baggage claim.
💡
Pre-activation tip: On iPhone, go to Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM → Use QR Code. On Android (Samsung/Pixel), Settings → Connections → SIM Manager → Add eSIM. The whole process takes under 2 minutes.
⚠️
Frequency bands: Japan uses unique bands including Band 18 and Band 26 for au/KDDI rural coverage. iPhone 13 and later, Samsung Galaxy S21 and later, and most Google Pixel 6+ devices support these bands. Older mid-range Android phones may not get optimal rural coverage.
🛜
At the airport: All major Japanese airports (Narita T1/T2/T3, Haneda, Kansai, Chubu) have free Wi-Fi if you need to activate on arrival. Look for the Narita/KIX free Wi-Fi networks — no registration required for the first 30 minutes.
⚡ What speeds to expect
Japan's 4G LTE network is one of the world's fastest and most consistent. In central Tokyo and Osaka you can expect 40–80 Mbps download speeds regularly, with peaks above 100 Mbps in modern areas like Shibuya, Shinjuku and Namba. Speeds rarely drop below 20 Mbps even during rush hour on the Tokyo Metro.
5G is available in central Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka on Docomo and SoftBank-backed eSIM plans. Most international eSIM plans access 4G LTE nationwide — check your plan's specifications before purchasing if 5G matters to you.
Rural areas and mountain national parks like Nikko, the Japanese Alps, and Yakushima typically deliver a solid 20–40 Mbps 4G. The Shinkansen network has full 4G throughout including most tunnels on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Tohoku lines.
🗺️ Coverage by region
🗼
Tokyo & Osaka: Flawless coverage on all networks including underground subway stations. 5G available on Docomo/SoftBank plans.
🚄
Shinkansen network: Full 4G coverage on all main Shinkansen lines. Tunnel gaps are brief (under 30 seconds) on most routes.
⛰️
Mountain areas: Hakone, Nikko, and Fuji Five Lakes have good 4G. Deep mountain trails (Daisetsuzan, Yakushima interior) have gaps — download offline maps before heading out.
🏝️
Okinawa & islands: Main Okinawa island has excellent coverage. Outer islands (Ishigaki, Miyako) have solid 4G in towns, patchier in remote areas.
📵
No-phone zones: Many traditional ryokan inns, onsen facilities, and temples actively discourage phone use. This is etiquette, not a coverage issue.
Bottom line
Japan is the most eSIM-friendly destination in Asia — and one of the best in the world.
Buy your plan before you fly, activate it on landing, and enjoy seamless connectivity everywhere from Akihabara to the Okinawa reefs. All three major carriers deliver world-class speeds and coverage. For most travellers, Airalo on the Docomo network is the default choice — reliable, fast and easy to top up if needed.
